• The maximum temperature and pressure limits on a PHE sealed with gasket are approximately 230°C and 2400 kPa.


• PHEs typically have heat transfer surface areas ranging from 0.5 to 1210 m2


• Less suitable for fluids with very high viscosity that may pose flow distribution problems


• Flow velocities should be higher than 0.1 m/s to avoid low heat-transfer coefficients and low heat exchanger efficiency

Advantages and Disadvantages


Advantages


• High thermal effectiveness
• High heat transfer surface area thus occupy less space (10% to 50% to that of a tubular heat exchanger)
• Heat transfer capacity can be easily adjusted by adding or removing plates
• Allows closer approach temperatures (1-2 ºC) than are possible with tubular exchangers (5 ºC)
Disadvantages


• Leaks related with the gaskets
• Suitable for liquid-liquid only, not well suited for boiling or condensing
• Higher pressure drop than tubular heat exchanger

Welcome to the Chemical Engineering Heat Transfer Laboratory at Curtin University. What is a Plate Heat Exchanger?


The plate heat exchanger contains thin metal plates that are compressed together in a rigid frame. Each plate is sealed with a rubber gasket or welded around the perimeter to allow hot and cold fluids flow through alternate channels for transferring heat.
